5 tips for working remotely

In these uncertain times,  many of us now face working  from home for the foreseeable future which can be daunting. Research has shown that working remotely can come with different challenges, including loneliness, distractions, communication issues, and missing a sense of belonging. We’ve listed our top 5 tips for working remotely, to help make things a little easier during this time. 

  1. Get into a routine

It’s important to set a daily routine to increase productivity and stay focused. As tempting as it might be to stay in your comfy pyjamas all day, this is likely to make you feel too relaxed, and not motivated to do your best work. To get into an appropriate mind-set, it’s best to get up and ready for the day, the same way you would if you were going to work. You should make a plan for the week of what you need to complete, or use your calendar to schedule your daily work, and be disciplined in following this through.

  1. Schedule regular breaks

Take time out during the day to have regular breaks, as without a break the day can feel much longer. Give yourself enough time to eat a healthy lunch, go for a walk or just sit in a different room. Once you’ve had a good break, you’ll feel refreshed and be more productive when you return to your work. It’ll also help to avoid burnout, which can easily happen if you don’t give yourself enough time to recharge.

  1. Communicate by utilising technology

Staying connected is essential when working remotely, to stay in the loop with others and keep team spirits high. Schedule regular meetings using video conferencing tools, and make use of instant messaging platforms. You can even incorporate technology into your break time too – arranging virtual coffee breaks with colleagues or friends can be a great way to connect with others and break up the day.

  1. Stay active

There’s plenty of ways to stay active if you’re working remotely, even if you can’t leave the house. Look online for an activity that works for you, such as a home yoga session or a high intensity fitness class. Some gyms are now live streaming their classes, and there’s lots of free content on video sharing platforms. You could also go for a walk or a jog before work, or during your lunch break.

  1. Reduce the chance of distractions

Setting up a space that is free from distractions, such as the television and the pile of laundry that needs to be done is important, to allow you to keep focused on work. Having a separate area, even if this is just the corner of your room, or at the kitchen table, that you can get away from once you’ve logged off will make it easier to switch off at the end of the day.
