Apprentice of the Year 2016

We were delighted to hear that one of our learners, Zac Challinor from Salford City College, was named Adult Apprentice of the Year 2016 at the Association of Colleges (AoC) Student of the Year Awards recently.

The AoC Student of the Year Awards highlight exceptional achievements and celebrate success. Colleges are able to nominate learners for their remarkable academic, vocational or extra-curricular activities. Zac Challinor received the award after dramatically changing his personal and professional circumstances and turning his life around.

Zac initially felt that education was not for him, and he ended up with a custodial sentence for involvement in the Salford riots in 2011. However, Zac worked hard on rehabilitation and was determined to improve his life – this determination even led to his story being turned into a short film by a local media company.

The contacts made through the media company introduced Zac to our Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. Zac commented: “The qualification appealed to me because I wanted the chance to work with students who may need guidance to stay on the right path.

Zac started his apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning and studied hard, embracing the opportunity to change his life. The qualification provided Zac with the chance to use his past experiences to deter students from making the wrong choices. Throughout his role as a teaching assistant, he has made a positive impact on the most disengaged and disadvantaged students, improving their learning and their life chances.

Zac said: “I found the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools very useful – I enjoyed learning the theory and seeing how this applies to my job role as a teaching assistant. I have already progressed in my position and enjoy how varied the role has become. Being employed, earning and gaining a qualification at the same time has been very beneficial.”

AoC President, Ian Ashman said: “This year’s nominations for the Student of the Year Awards were of an exceptionally high standard. Zac’s determination, spirit and motivation are truly inspiring.”

Zac is currently working towards the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools and is employed at The Albion Academy.
