CACHE NVQ Level 3 in Playwork

Danny Pitman, who achieved his CACHE NVQ Level 3 in Playwork, was thrilled to receive recognition of his talents from SkillsActive.

The 5th annual Skills Active Playwork Conference, ‘Out2Play’ attracted over 200 employers and playworkers from across the country, and was a huge success. SkillsActive had arranged a varied workshop programme, and visitors could also wander around the ‘market place’ where CACHE and others were exhibiting. However, the most important part of the agenda for Danny Pitman was the special ceremony which had been organized at the end of the day to celebrate his achievement of the CACHE NVQ Level 3 in Playwork.

Danny was nominated for the award by his tutor Penny Sparrow from Barnet Playwork Assessment Centre, for his ‘natural and mature understanding of the playwork principles’ and his determination to succeed even when faced with difficult challenges. Danny completed his CACHE NVQ Level 3 in Playwork in Spring 2007, and has since gone on to become manager of his setting, Busy Bees, taking over from his mother when she retired. This came at a crucial time, as the school in which the club was based was being rebuilt, and Danny was faced with the difficult challenge of finding and moving to new premises. Although he managed to find somewhere suitable, unfortunately this premises was only held on a short term lease- which meant that Busy Bees had to move again.

“At this stage most people would have given up, but not Danny,” says his tutor Penny. “He always puts the children’s needs first and eventually, after much searching and promotion of the club, a local school offered them premises. When asked why she considered Danny to be a worthy recipient of the special Skills Active certificate Penny said, “Danny knows that good quality play provision is about giving children the opportunity to run around, to explore possibilities, to choose, take risks and work things out for themselves. These are the things that make Danny a fantastic playworker, we are naturally very proud of him.”

Danny was welcomed on stage Paul Bonel, Playwork Unit Director at Skills Active, and officially presented with his certificate by CACHE Centre Advisor Barbara Philbrick.
