CACHE Level 1 Award in Getting Started in a Pre-School Setting
Luxury tour operator chooses CACHE for childcare staff in Mauritius

My current role allows me to combine two passions - childcare and travel. I always wanted to follow this sort of career path and I love my job. |
Former NNEB candidate and experienced practitioner Charlotte Kinnish, Childcare Manager at luxury tour operator Scott Dunn, appreciates just how important it is for childcare staff to access good quality training. "Most of our hotels in Mauritius operate childcare facilities. We have two dedicated team members at Scott Dunn who are qualified to Level 3, but we also employ local Mauritian staff to work in the setting."
"As many of them had no childcare qualifications, I thought it would be fantastic to offer the team an opportunity to enhance their skills with some formal training and CACHE sprang to mind - I trained with CACHE myself!"
Last year, Charlotte and her team began investigating the possibility of delivering CACHE qualifications to the staff in Mauritius, and soon decided the Level 1 Award in getting started in a pre-school setting would be a great starting point. "Our locally employed team in Mauritius passed the qualification in July this year, and we are now offering them the chance to progress onto a Level 2 qualification- the CACHE Level 2 CCLD," says Charlotte.
Scott Dunn operates under their new 'OurSpace' brand in Mauritius, and Charlotte says that delivering CACHE qualifications has been "a really exciting part of our project." In Mauritius there are currently six members of staff enrolled on CACHE courses but this figure will definitely increase. Our long term goal will be to roll these qualifications out to other destinations both short and long-haul and we're really keen to publicise how well the project has gone so far. Childcare is a growing part of our business and we currently employ over fifty staff in our resorts worldwide so there's lots of room for development there."
Charlotte herself speaks very positively about the opportunities available to those who have completed CACHE qualifications. "I loved my NNEB Diploma as it helped me get where I am today," she says. For Charlotte, the fact that CACHE qualifications are recognised internationally has proved very significant as her career has progressed.
After completing her NNEB in 1996 she worked as a nanny in London, before becoming interested in working abroad. She joined a tour operator and worked as a nanny in various different locations including ski resorts for around 5 years, before progressing swiftly up the career ladder. "In 2002 I joined Ski Beat Limited as a Resort Manager in France. I was responsible for thirteen staff including chalet hosts and nannies." The role also allowed Charlotte to develop excellent relationship building skills with resort staff, suppliers, locals and holiday makers using her bilingual skills at the same time. "After a season working as a Childcare Co-ordinator in another French resort, I moved onto a role at a Bilingual nursery in London. As a senior nursery nurse, I was responsible for the toddler room, providing English support to three to five year olds to ensure a healthy balance of both languages in the setting." In 2004, Charlotte secured a management position within a nursery before joining Scott Dunn.
"My current role allows me to combine two passions - childcare and travel. I always wanted to follow this sort of career path and I love my job. I'm really looking forward to driving forward the childcare part of our business and watching it grow and develop in the future."
