Who is the qualification aimed at?


Experienced Playworkers wishing to gain a Level 3 qualification or those who are new to playwork, but have experience of working with children in other settings.


What are the entry requirements?


There are no formal entry requirements, but learners must be at least 16 years of age.



What does the qualification cover?


The role of the playworker, all aspects of managing playwork settings and the links between playwork theory, reflective observations and practice. The Diploma is recognised as a technical certificate for SkillsActive Apprenticeship Framework

What age range is covered?


4 to 16 years.


How is it Assessed?


  • The Award is assessed is by a multiple choice question paper

  • The Certificate is assessed is by a multiple choice question paper as the Award plus four assignments

  • For the Diploma, assessment is by the same methods listed for the Certificate, plus one extra assignment

Are practical placements required?


It is expected that learners will be in employment or volunteering in a playwork setting.

How long does the qualification take to complete?


  • The Level 3 Award is 60 guided learning hours plus 60 recommended hours in a playwork setting.

  • The Level 3 Certificate is 360 guided learning hours plus 300 recommended hours working in a playwork setting.

  • The Level 3 Diploma is 360 guided learning hours plus a further 360 recommended hours working in a playwork setting.

Which job roles are learners qualified to undertake on completion of this qualification?


  • The Award will allow learners to work as a Supervisor in summer playschemes.
  • The Certificate will allow learners ro work as an Assistant Leader or New Supervisor in all Play settings
  • The Diploma will allow learners to work as a Leader / Senior Playworker in all Play settings
